Our classic and special interest vehicle inventory can now be seen in our beautiful indoor climate-controlled showroom on Transit Road in the Lancaster - Depew area. The Corvette, which was designed by Harley Earl, was introduced in 1953 as a two passenger fiberglass body sports roadster. Powered by a six cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. All 1953 Corvettes were hand built resulting in only 300 units offered for sale. 1954 production had been relocated to St. Louis Missouri, a move that increased production numbers north of 3600 units. Chevrolets hopes the introduction of the 265ci V8 engine in the 1955 Corvette model would boost public interest was quickly dashed by years end, because only 700 1955 Corvettes were sold. Serious thought was given to discontinue production of the Corvette and if not for the input of Belgian born race car driver Zora Arkus Duntov, that might have been the case. Duntov, who had been recently hired by GM convinced officials that the Corvette would be better received by the public as a high-performance offering. This single decision was arguably the reason the Corvette still exists today. Offerings in the 1956 model included a three speed standard transmission, an optional 240hp engine with two four-barrel carburetors, suspension upgrades, roll up windows and a complete body makeover. The public applauded these changes resulting in 3,467 1956 Corvettes being sold. The 1956 Corvette we are offering here today is an exceptional example, showing 56K miles on the odometer. Having come to us from its former West Virginia owner who was an NCRS member for 40 years, this Corvette had previously undergone a frame off restoration done to NCRS standards. Equipped with its correct 265ci V8 engine and totally rebuilt automatic transmission, this Corvette is in museum quality condition. An album of pictures documenting its restoration is included in the sale. The Al Knock seat upholstery and interior is complemented with correct Daytona weave carpet. The factory dash instrumentation and tachometer are in perfect working order and the radio delete plate is in place as well. All window glass has been replaced with corresponding LOF dating and weatherstripping is new throughout. The convertible top shows in new condition and two sets of tires and wheels are included with the purchase of this stunning Corvette. One set are Coker radial whitewalls for driving ease and the second set are original type Coker bias BF Goodrich Silvertown tires. The body and paint are in remarkable condition and the underside of this car appears as nearly new. This 1956 Corvette has been beautifully restored and among the finest we have recently seen. It is available for you to view together with many other fine classic examples in our climate-controlled showroom.
