Mercedes-Benz 230SL replaced both the 300SL and 190SL and ushered in a new single-platform sports car policy for its maker. Fast-rising designer Paul Bracq penned the new SLs bodylines, including its sturdy Pagoda style removable hardtop, and Bela Barnyi engineered the vehicles industry-leading, built-in safety features. Development was overseen by legendary Mercedes-Benz personnel including Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. Models progressed from the 230 SL through the 2.5-liter 250SL, which heralded 4-wheel disc brakes, to the ultimate 2.8-liter 280SL produced from November 1967 to February 1971. While improvements applied to the 280SL were mainly detail-oriented, they were numerous, and combined to make a great road car even better. The enhanced horsepower output, low-end torque, and all-around driving flexibility of the 280SL captivated road testers in period and it continues to enchant collectors and marque enthusiasts today. Just 830 examples of the 280SL were produced for the last model year of 1971, including this very handsome example we are thrilled to offer for purchase. Desirable late production example, painted in a stunning dark blue with a beautiful beige leather interior. injected 180-hp overhead-cam inline-six backed by a 4-Speed Manual with four-wheel disc brakes. Equipped with under dash air conditioning and a Becker Mexico cassette radio that is in good working order, Ivory steering wheel and shift knob. Safety features include an energy-absorbing steering column and three-point seatbelts. Recent service performed includes a full tune-up, new gas tank, new stainless steel exhaust, new Bilstein shock absorbers on all for corners, new tires, and newly chromed bumpers. Detailed undercarriage presents very well with correct trunk floor and floor pans. This car is extremely clean and appears to have lived a gentle life, it is ready to be enjoyed.
