This 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner is truly a marvel of50s engineering and would make a great cruising classic car foranybody! In 1959, the Ford Motor Company completely redesigned itsproduct offerings and those changes led to Ford winning the GoldMedal for Exceptional Styling at the Brussels World Fair. The newlyrestyled Fords featured a new highly sculptured overhanging lipabove the dual headlights incorporated into the new flatter frontfenders. On the new "Galaxie" models, which was an attempt of Fordto capitalizing on the worlds infatuation with outer space, a newbright metal trim was added around the exterior of the headlightsand an even higher level of distinction for this new top trimlevel. The Galaxies featured matching brightwork on the rearquarter panels as well further adding to that elevated look. 1959also marked the final year for the Skyliner, that is, theconvertible with a retractable hardtop that fully retracted intothe rear portion of the vehicle. The hide-away hardtop design gavethe Skyliners the looks of a hardtop with the top up and the openfeel of a convertible with the top down. Originally slated for theContinental Mark II, Ford spent a considerable fortune developingthe underlying Skyliner technology. When the idea to integrate thetechnology into the Mark II was scrapped, Fords engineersretrofitted the retractable to its Fairlane models with the firstyear of the Skyliner being the 1957 models. Utilizing 10 solenoids,7 high-torque motors, 610 feet of wire, along with numerous relaysand microswitches, the retractable hardtop is still to this day atrue feat of engineering. Of the nearly half million Galaxiesproduced by Ford in 1959, only 12,915 were the Skyliner model whichmakes this particular vehicle quite rare. Powering this 59Skyliner is a 332 Cubic Inch V8 engine paired with a single 2barrel carburetor that was said to push out 225 horsepower in itsday. The 332 V8 is backed by an automatic transmission ensuringthat anybody can take this classic 50s cruiser for a spin aroundthe block. Exhaust exits through a dual exhaust setup that givesthis Ford a nice throaty sound. This 1959 Ford Galaxie has greatoptions! With power steering, getting this 59 Skyliner in and outof tight parking spaces is a breeze and makes this car an absolutejoy to drive. T
